History of Shave to Save Beginning in the Fall semester of 2006, the newly chartered Kappa Sigma Fraternity at Kutztown University wanted to plan a philanthropy event that would show off their key attributes. After the new year, Kappa Sigma hopped into full swing to develop their event. One of the goals set forth was to create something big, so that both the campus and community heard about it. Many ideas were thrown around until the Fraternity decided on a cancer-benefit philanthropy, which eventually came to be known as Shave to Save. Over the next several months, ideas were brainstormed, meetings were set, businesses were contacted, and preparations were developed. When the day finally arrived, Kappa Sigma and the Relay for Life could not have asked for a more beautiful spring day. Shave to Save became an instant success, raising over $6,500 in its first year. The triumph of that day led Kappa Sigma to call Shave to Save it's signature event to be held every year. In
April of 2009, Shave to Save raised $11,023, for
a three-year total of over $26,000 for the American
Cancer Society! What is the schedule of events? Now
until April 23 - Sign-up your organization
or group of friends to participate in the Relay for Life walk on April
23 - 24. Sign up by clicking here
or by visiting the Community Outreach Center in the SUB (next to PSECU). 10am - 7pm - Shave to Save and Relay for Life begin. Men & women's haircuts, over $1,000 in silent auction prizes, DJ, food, giveaways, dunk tank, Spuds mobile food truck, carnival games, free APEX@Kutztown gear, and much more. Location: SUB Lawn
At
the event, come get your hair cut or shaved. Professional
barbers and hairdressers will be on site! Or, just stop by
for these fun activities: Is Shave to Save still partnered with the Relay for Life? Sortof. Since the first event in 2007, Shave to Save and the Relay for Life have been co-events at the same time and location. Due to scheduling and location issues, Shave to Save 2010 will not feature the Relay for Life. However, all donations from Shave to Save will still be given to the KU Relay for Life, which is part of the American Cancer Society.
Absolutely
not! There are many other ways to help out. You can purchase a t-shirt,
silent auction tickets, or by simply giving a donation. Why am I making a check payable to Kappa Sigma and not the American Cancer Society? When the event is over, we give the A.C.S. one check for the total amount. It would be very difficult to give them hundreds of separate checks and cash donations.
We are always looking for businesses to participate in Shave to Save. Please see the donation page for further details or contact Kevin Fonash, at mmazz958@live.kutztown.edu.
There are many benefits to becoming a sponsor! Please see this document (PDF) that illustrates the pro's of becoming a sponsor.
